WOW the dead

Artist Info:

WOW the dead, born 1978 in Germany is one of the rare girls in the streetart-scene.
She completed her design studies with her own 3D animated short film "the lost son".  She now lives as a free artist.
In her streetart she tries to wake people from their everyday shopping coma and reminds them to reflect on themselves and what they really want in life (e.g. in the "what happened to your dreams" piece).
She is finding new ways of expression, by combining stencil-graphic with classic art techniques.

Interview:

Where can one find your work?

You can find me on myspace (myspace.com/wowthedead), or you just visit me in my studio, just write me a message and I let you know where it is.

When did you begin with Streetart?

I've done several art and graffiti projects with kids in Germany and Chile back in the 90s. But really got into it five years ago, when I saw a handmade sticker, a simple one-layer stencil on a road sign. Since then I have been addicted to stencils.

How would you describe your style?

My work is mostly about people and their dreams, about hope and the hard times. As you can see in the series "heroes of utopia" and “I'm a detail freak”, I love doing complicated stuff.
So my style is optimistic and highly detailed.

Who has had the biggest influence on your work?

I love Banksy, but don't know if he really influenced my work. At the moment I'm working on a new technique that is influenced by Chuck Close. (google him ... great artist). I think the people that surround me and their feedback to my work have influenced me the most.

What is Streetart to you?

The freedom to express yourself in the street, giving dead space a new usage, like the backside of a road sign, gray walls etc., this way we can expose people to art in spaces where this would normally not be possible. I'm part of the public so I think it is my right to use the public space for my art.

What projects do you want to realize in the future?

At the moment I'm planning my first solo exhibition, I have plans with the "heroes of utopia" series and this summer I want to travel and do stuff with other European artists.
