Artist Info
Scotch! has been into art since childhood. He found his niche: stenciling, from his roommate. Together, they would go bomb San Antonio city with personal stencils like Super Mario Bros scene, girl friends, pets, movies.
Scotch! went on solo & continued to bring San Antonio more knee-slapping memorable street art such as Tricycle girl, the crotch-grabbing famous trooper, the pantsless Laurel & Hardy, and Ron Burgundy’s torso. San Antonio Current paper gave Scotch! Best Anonymous Public Art 2 years in a row. Scotch! and co-conspirators utilized the awesome networking power of Myspace.com to pull off a extralegal public art installation coordinated and executed by his group calling itself Uniting Artists Through Crime. The project quickly caught the eyes of lowbrow/street art magazine called Juxtapoz (www.juxtapoz.com). The stencilist had a huge success with his first art show "S. W. Stencil Show" leading to other gallery showings in New York, DC, Houston, Indiana, Portland to name a few. Scotch! continues to push for new techniques/ideas that people of all ages & genres can enjoy.

Interview:
When & why did you start doing Streetart?
I picked up stenciling from my roommate. He did it for fun but i got really into it. We both love the movie Anchorman, that's where our names were born from: I was Scotch! so I did Burgundy characters while: he was HAND GRANADE & did Brick characters.
What is your biggest influence?
Humor. I enjoy doing pieces that make people laugh or smile. I have done images that are artsy or whatnot but mainly stick to funny pieces.
How do you prepare when you go out on the streets, how risky is it in San Antonio?
Usually, I like to pick out my spots before hand, then go hit them all at once. If their big stencils, I have a van I drive around with, pull up to the spot & hit it. The vehicle is used a shield to block what I'm doing. Little stencils I may walk or ride a bike depending how much ground I'm covering at the moment..
SA is pretty chill in most areas…downtown is lil harder but its my hood. So I've been able to get around there. We do have a lot of retired vets/ law enforcement folks so they always try to pull some citizens arrest BS, so its always best not to have anyone see you, just in case.
What happened a few months ago when we did not here from you for a while?
lol I got arrested with my homeboy ENOS doing stencils, actually finished my stuff & he was slacking drunk, doing a fill in. SAPD whipped around the corner & caught us red handed. I had other charges on me so I did 3 months in county.
How is the general perception of street art in San Antonio?
People seem to like it. I always seem to get a positive response from all types of people young & old. There aren’t too many street artists here, so the competition is weak.
How are the reactions to your work? What have you observed?
One time I was driving pass the crotch grabbing stormtrooper stencil, & these 2 kids happened to walk by just at that time. They saw it & their expression was "WHOOOA!!" practically jumping off their feet with excitement…that was priceless.
You balance elements of humor and social criticism in your pieces.
What determines in what direction it goes?
Everything I do is pretty acceptable to the public besides being illegal. I usually play it safe…I'm pretty chill dude so I just want people to enjoy what I do & not complain much. If I was younger doing this, I probably not give a f**k & do more offensive stuff.
What are your plans for the future?
Push new ideas, want to mix techniques, building crazy-shaped canvas' that work with the art itself, got a few street projects I'm brainstorming for this year, also planning a world tour in 2010 & getting shirts made with 500godz.com :)
